Welcome to the latest edition of SEND News. Having had our first SEND local area inspection in March 2020, we will be having our re-visit on Monday 28th November to Thursday 1 December 2022. The re-visit by Ofsted (Office for Standards in Education, Children’s Services and Skills) and the CQC (Care Quality Commission) will take place across the Somerset SEND Partnership (Somerset County Council, NHS Somerset and education settings).
In March 2020, inspectors spoke with children, young people, families, and the people who run the services, following this Ofsted and CQC said that Somerset needed to do better, outlining nine areas where improvements needed to be made. The re-visit will review the progress made in these nine areas, and will ask senior leaders to provide evidence that progress has been made against the Written Statement of Action (WSoA), that was published in December 2020.
Over the last two years, teams across Somerset have been working hard to improve our services through nine different improvement areas. We want to take this opportunity to bring you a special edition of SEND News highlighting some of our successes over the past couple of years.
After the re-visit is complete, we will receive notification from OFSTED and CQC about the results of the revisit, this will be published a month after the visit.
The Local Area Partnership is currently consulting on the SEND Strategy (our shared plans for the future) for 2023 to 2026, and will continue to collaborate with you to develop the areas identified within it.
The new strategy (which is currently open for consultation) will build on what we have achieved so far and focuses on four themes:
- Working together
- Getting help as early as possible
- Access to the right support and provision
- Preparing for the future
If you haven't had a chance to share your views with us, don't worry - there's still time to have your say. The consultation closes on 23rd December - visit: Somerset Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities (SEND) Strategy 2023/26 – Somerset County Council Consultations (inconsult.uk)
On behalf of the Somerset SEND Partnership, I want to thank everyone for their feedback and valuable input to help us improve services for our children and Young People,
Acting Director of Children's Services
